DESCRIPTION OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE ACADEMY'S ACTIVITIES OR IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS:

Prof. Aguirre-Bastos was President of the Academy in Bolivia between 1992-2002. Represents the Academy in the International Human Rights Network since 1993; leads (2023-2027) a project in Central America on the innovation-inclusion nexus; (Founder) and Council Member (2025) of the International Physics Center in Colombia; Member (2024) of the Global Council for Science Education of IAP Program on Science Education. Led a regional project on new technologies (Andean University- European Commission); Advisor to UNIDO’s technology foresight program; Presided the Board of one of Bolivia's biosphere reserves; Provided science advice to Bolivia's Congress and the Ministries of Sustainable Development, Agriculture, and Education. Executive Secretary of the National Council for Science and Technology of Bolivia (1994-1997). Consultant to UNIDO, UNESCO, UNCTAD, Interamerican Development Bank, Latin American Development Bank in Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Mexico, Central America and several countries in South America. Head of the Technology Department of the Andean Group Secretariat in Lima (1979-1989). Associate of the International Physics Center in Trieste (1975-1981). Director of the University of La Paz Physical Research Institute (1973-1977) engaging research groups of Italy and Japan to work in Bolivia. President the National Committee for the "Man and Biosphere" Program of UNESCO. For UNESCO, member of the four-person team publishing the five-year (2015-2020) Report on the State of Science in Latin America (as part of the World Science Report).
