DESCRIPTION OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE ACADEMY'S ACTIVITIES OR IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS:
Marileen Dogterom is an internationally acclaimed researcher and president of the KNAW (2022 to June 2026). As professor of Bionanoscience at Delft University of Technology, she is one of the pioneers in the field of biomolecular and cellular physics. Her research focuses on the cytoskeleton. As an Academy president and active scientist, she has a deep understanding of current and emerging trends in both international and national science policy and the international science-policy landscape. She is passionate about themes like international collaboration, academic freedom, research integrity, research security, and scientific publishing practices. She is committed to future-proof academia, as evidenced by her endeavors in the Dutch national steering committee on Recognition & Rewards. She is also very interested in science diplomacy, attending the Chief Science Advisor Roundtable during the G20 in South Africa this year and frequently takes part in knowledge missions with the Dutch Ministry of Science. The importance of collaboration between scientists from different countries is also a recurring theme in her own research. As a researcher, she is one of the initiators of the European Synthetic Cell Initiative, a network of European research laboratories, institutions and companies. Within the International Alliance for Synthetic Cells the European Initiative interacts with similar networks across the globe. 


EVIDENCE OF PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES IN AN IAP, NATIONAL ACADEMY OR OTHER SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATION'S GOVERNING BODY:
Marileen Dogterom has been the foreign representative of the KNAW for over six years, since 2019, first as vice-president and since 2022 as a president. Prof. Dogterom was a member of IAP’s policy board (2019-2022) and as Academy president she represents the Netherlands in the European Science Advisors Forum (ESAF) and the OECD Global Science Forum. Prof. Dogterom is also a member of UNESCO’s International Bioethics Committee, which works on the ethical and legal issues raised by research in the life sciences and their applications.
