DESCRIPTION OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE ACADEMY'S ACTIVITIES OR IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS:
In her many roles bringing forward projects and work of the GYA, Shymaa Enany has sharpened her leadership skills, giving her much experience in global science policy.
In Africa, Shymaa was the Egyptian ambassador in Next Einstein Forum (NEF) from 2019 to 2022. During this period, she had many roles in capacity building initiatives and science policy engagement. Also, as a fellow of the Africa Science Leadership Program (ASLP), she has worked to empower early career researchers across the continent. She organized and moderated Africa Science Week 2022 (North Africa Edition) and led workshops on epidemic preparedness, vaccine production in LMICs, and women in sciences. Her collaborations extend to institutions such as the African Academy of Sciences (AAS).
Furthermore, Shymaa was selected as a Future Earth Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC) leading scientist and sustainability leader in November 2023. She contributed to discussions on environmental sustainability, climate change, and the role of science in sustainable development during her participation in the Future Earth Assembly 2024 in Finland.
Shymaa would be an excellent contributor to the IAP leadership, aiming to strengthen the global science policy dialogues, support equitable research funding, and enhance collaboration between LMICs and global scientific institutions.
EVIDENCE OF PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES IN AN IAP, NATIONAL ACADEMY OR OTHER SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATION'S GOVERNING BODY:
Shymaa Enany has been active in the GYA as co-lead for the working groups Bio 2 Bio and Global Health, she has been part of the Outputs Review Committee (ORC), the Nominations & Opportunities Committee and the Membership Selection Committee. In her GYA roles, she has led the New Voices in Global Health session at the 2021 World Health Summit, tackling COVID-19 vaccination rollout, and moderated a session on vaccine production at the GYA 2023 AGM in Rwanda. She has collaborated on many projects advocating open science and science education. In fundraising, she has successfully raised funds and secured grants for research and scientific projects throughout her career. She has also led fundraising efforts for holding many scientific conferences in Egypt, gender equity workshops, and capacity-building initiatives.
