DESCRIPTION OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE ACADEMY'S ACTIVITIES OR IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS:
Dr. Hamburg is the current Co-President of IAP, where she provides strategic leadership for the global network of science, engineering and medical academies. Prior to IAP’s current structure, she held leadership roles within IAP’s medical arm, contributing significantly to its growth and influence. Throughout her tenure, Peggy has led successful fundraising efforts and played a central role in developing impactful programs that address global scientific and health challenges. Her leadership has been instrumental in advancing IAP’s mission and expanding its reach and effectiveness worldwide. Dr. Hamburg is an international leader in biomedicine and public health, with accomplishments across government, philanthropy and the private sector. Trained in internal medicine, she conducted research at NIH and Rockefeller University before devoting her career to public service. Early roles included Assistant Director at NIAID, working on HIV/AIDS research and policy and New York City Health Commissioner, addressing urgent issues like HIV, drug-resistant TB, health disparities and environmental threats. She served as Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation at HHS under President Clinton and as FDA Commissioner under President Obama, where she advanced innovation, public health, and global collaboration. Dr. Hamburg has held leadership roles with WHO, GAVI, CEPI, the Gates Foundation, and Harvard’s Global Advisory Council. From 2015-2020, she was Foreign Secretary of the U.S. NAM
