DESCRIPTION OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE ACADEMY'S ACTIVITIES OR IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS:
Professor Dorothea Hilhorst (Erasmus University Rotterdam) is an internationally renowned expert in humanitarian studies, focusing on aid–society relations. She examines how humanitarian crises evolve; their impact on individuals, institutions, communities, and societies; and the responses these crises trigger. With her work, she has been a pioneer in the relatively new field of humanitarian studies. She has led many international research programmes and her cutting-edge work has been supported by several prestigious and highly competitive personal grants. She has developed an extensive international network, bridging academia, practice and policymaking. She combines academic excellence with strong engagement in policy, practice, and activism. She is passionate about bridging the gaps between academics, practitioners, policymakers, and the public and regularly appears as an expert on Dutch television and radio media. As a leading scholar in her field, she regularly acts as an advisor to the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has testified before the Dutch parliament and provided advice to judges from the ICC and UN. She believes that research must be meaningful and therefore aims to make a real difference in global development and social justice through her research, collaborations and public engagement. Her expertise and experience provides valuable input to IAP’s commitment to bridge the north/south gap and strengthen the relations between science and policy.
