Biography

Norashikin Shamsudin, Malaysia

Dr Norashikin Shamsudin is a Consultant Dermatologist and Associate Professor in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. She earned her medical degrees from University of Nottingham and following internal medicine training in the UK was admitted to Membership of the Royal College of Physician (MRCP). She subsequently underwent training in dermatology at Hospital Kuala Lumpur and was awarded Advanced Master of Dermatology degree. She is currently pursuing a fellowship in clinical dermatopathology, which has brought her to training centres in Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taipei and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok.
Over the years, she has held various academic and administrative posts at various levels in the faculty. As the Dermatology Coordinator, she is responsible for teaching and training undergraduate dermatologyto final year medical students. She is a founding member of the Dermatology Unit in the Department of Medicine, and has been heading the Unit since its inception in 2009. The head is in charge of managing the dermatology clinical services at Hospital Serdang (the universityís teaching hospital) and she was the first resident dermatologist in the hospital. She was instrumental in the setting-up and provision of phototherapy and laser services. Under her leadership, the services have expanded to cater for the increasing number of patients and referrals from the surrounding region.
Following her promotion to Associate Professorship, she was appointed as the Head of Department of Medicine.Her leadership has seen the department soar to greater heights, with increasing number of academic staff recruited, as well as increasing volume of academic, research and publication activities. Presently, the department is working on offering Masters of Internal Medicine (MMED) by 2013, which is a postgraduate medical programme that aims to produce more internists for the country.
She sits on various committees at national level. She was appointed by Ministry of Health, Malaysia as an expert member for the development committee for national clinical practice guideline (CPG) on the management of psoriasis. She is a member of National Specialist Registration (NSR) Specialty Subcommittee for Dermatology, which is responsible for credentialing dermatologists in the country. She also sits on the newly-formed Conjoint Board for Advanced Master of Dermatology which coordinates, consolidates and streamlines the training of dermatology for the whole country.
She is an active member of several local and international societies, namely Dermatological Society of Malaysia, Malaysian Society of Allergy and Immunology, Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia, International Society of Dermatology and American Academy of Dermatology.
