DESCRIPTION OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE ACADEMY'S ACTIVITIES OR IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS:
Prof. Sharma has advanced the Academy’s mission to promote scientific excellence, foster international cooperation, and strengthen the role of science in diplomacy and policy development. His tenure emphasized global partnerships, positioning INSA as a key voice in multilateral science dialogue.
As Co-Chair of the Science20 (S20) during India’s G20 Presidency, Prof. Sharma led the international science-policy dialogue, guiding consensus on key science-based policy recommendations aimed at enhancing global well-being. Under his stewardship, S20 provided structured inputs to the G20 deliberations, reinforcing the importance of scientific evidence in policymaking.
He also represented the Academy in several major international fora including:

  • 2023 Science Council of Asia (SCA) Conference and General Assembly, focused on fostering scientific cooperation to address critical sustainability issues across Asia and globally.
  • 2024 BRICS Academies Forum, where he emphasized collaborative scientific approaches to address shared regional and global challenges.
  • Science20 (S20) Meeting (2024), hosted by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences under Brazil’s G20 Presidency, on the theme “Science for Global Transformation.” His participation highlighted India’s continuing commitment to global science engagement and policy shaping.

Through these engagements, Prof. Sharma strengthened INSA’s international profile and contributed to shaping a sustainable, inclusive, science-informed future.


EVIDENCE OF PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES IN AN IAP, NATIONAL ACADEMY OR OTHER SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZATION'S GOVERNING BODY:
Prof. Ashutosh Sharma serves as the President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and an Institute Chair Professor at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He is a Chair of the Governing Council of INSA and member and past Council member of multiple national academies including the Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) contributing to governance, fellow selection, and strategic initiatives. He served as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science & Technology (DST), where he represented India on numerous international science platforms, leading bilateral and multilateral collaborations and contributing to global science and technology policy discussions. He was instrumental in establishing joint collaborations with international academies, research councils, and intergovernmental organizations, focusing on pressing global challenges like climate change, public health, clean energy, and sustainable development.
