Dr. Suraj Bhattarai is an International Health physician from Nepal with a long-term experience in Nepalese health sector at the community level in both rural and urban settings. Since the beginning of his medical training in Nepal he has been in constant touch with the nation's population and disease dynamics in relation to communicable and non-communicable diseases impacted by unhealthy way of living. Later on, with the help of training that he received in clinical medicine and research from various health institutions of Nepal and the USA, he developed a general understanding of the differences in health systems between the developing and developed countries.

Currently he is affiliated with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), a center of academic and research excellence which leads hundreds of community-oriented research projects on disease dynamics and urban health. He is also am a member of Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (RSTMH). Before moving to London, he worked as a Clinical research fellow at Patan Hospital, Kathmandu, getting involved with the epidemiological studies on childhood infections sponsored by the Oxford University (Oxford Vaccine Group) - Nepal has a huge burden of infectious diseases in all age groups not only due to unhygienic living practices, poor air quality, and lack of adequate health services but also due to an unorganized urbanization, fragile health policies, lack of political will, and recurring natural disasters.

In Nepal, he works closely with Nepal Academy of Science & Technology (NAST) for capacity building projects in health and research. In 2016, he was selected as ‘Young Physician Leader’ by InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) to participate in a series of leadership workshops and attend World Health Summit in Berlin. Following this, he represented his country in high-level scientific meetings such as the ‘World Science Forum’ and the ‘TWAS-ROCASA Young Scientists Meeting’. Additionally, he has served as a member of a number of scientific committees such as ‘Health in All Policies’ led by IAP-Health and Chinese Academy of Engineering, that are actively working not only for the advancement of health, science, and research, but also for the formulation of newer international health policies. He is proud to be a newly elected member of Global Young Academy, a global network of young scientists, and an affiliate of its working groups- Global health, and Science diplomacy in South-Asia.
