Responsible research practices and dual-use dilemmas discussed at Trieste workshop

Biotechnology & Biosecurity
Last September, IAP joined with TWAS and OPCW to host a workshop on responsible research practices for young scientists. A report has just been posted on the TWAS website.

An IAP-OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) workshop for chemists and biochemists, part of the TWAS Science Diplomacy programme, explored dilemmas and challenges in doing research responsibly, and bridging the science-policy divide. The workshop 'Policy and Diplomacy for Scientists: Introduction to responsible research practices in chemical and biochemical sciences' , held 12 - 15 September 2017 as part of the TWAS Science Diplomacy programme, drew over 30 researchers from across the developed and developing world to discuss the complicated and sometimes daunting ways that chemistry and ethical concerns can intermingle. Participants included young researchers from Argentina, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Nigeria and Sri Lanka. A full report on the workshop is now available on the TWAS website.
