Dr Lakmali Amarasiri is a senior lecturer in Physiology with a special interest in respiratory and gastro-intestinal physiology and a Commonwealth Academic Fellow further trained in lung function testing. She teaches physiology to undergraduate and post-graduate students and school children through outreach activities of the Physiological Society of Sri Lanka. She is also a resource person in pulmonary function testing techniques and interpretation workshops.
Her post-graduate thesis was based on the relationship between bronchial asthma and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, for which she was awarded the Professor K.N. Seneviratne Memorial Research Award for outstanding postgraduate research in Physiology in 2012. She continues to engage in research on those two disease entities and has published widely in this area. She has received many awards including Presidential awards in the years 2009-2012. She also performs spirometry, gastric emptying, oesophageal pH monitoring and manometry as a service function. She obtained training in pulmonary function testing from the Department of Allergy and Immunology, Alfred Hospital, Melbourne, Australia and from the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, UK. She is a council member of the Physiological Society of Sri Lanka and a member of the Allergy & Immunology Society of Sri Lanka & World Allergy & Immunology Society and of the World Allergy Organization (WAO). She received the Young Physician Leader award in 2013 and served as an alumnus organizer of the Young Physician Leader programme in 2014.
