Over 40 nominations were received from member academies and 20 participants from 17 different countries were selected to attend the workshop and prepare a session for presentation within the core Word Health Summit programme on 22 October 2013. At the very last moment, one of the YPL was unfortunately unable to travel. During their stay in Berlin, the 19 YPL participated in the specific leadership development programme, discussing their pre-event readings and carrying out various exercises, and prepared presentations to be made within the WHS. A panel composed of IAMP Co-Chairs Prof. Lai Meng Looi and Prof. Detlev Ganten, plus Prof. E. Krieger, Brazilian Academy of Sciences and director for International Relations of the Medical School of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, Prof. Jimmy Volmink, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, S.Africa, and Jacob A. Gayle, PhD, Vice President, Medtronic Philanthropy, shared their experiences in senior leadership. A dinner hosted by the German national Academy of Science provided an opportunity for the YPL to meet with the members of the IAMP Executive Committee. On 22 October, 2013 The YPL presented a session within the WHS on the Challenges that face a Young Physician Leader and the support that they would like to see from their institutions and from Senior Leadership The YPL spent a day as guests of the Bayer Science & Education Foundation, visiting their facilities as well as the Max Delbrueck Centrum. To date, sponsorships and in-kind contributions have been received from the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany, the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the World Health Summit-M8 Alliance enabling IAMP to support travel and accommodation of the YPLs. All faculty time has been donated by IAMP EC members and other scientific leaders. In 2013, support for the programme has been provided by the Bayer Science & Education Foundation During the three-day WHS, attended by a global group of medical and scientific professionals, government officials and business leaders including the World Economic Forum and health-related international organizations the YPLs are exposed to an outstanding scientific and policy programme and encouraged to exploit the unprecedented networking opportunities.
