Following the 2016 YPL call for proposals for the annual October leadership training workshop, 24 selected participants arrived in Berlin on 6 October 2016.
The programme began with a treasure hunt designed to break the ice and show the participants a tiny part of this ever-changing city. This was followed by a welcome dinner hosted by IAP for Health co-chair and World Health Summit president, Detlev Ganten.
Friday 7 October: The morning was dedicated to organized visits to the Berlin Buch research park which also hosts the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC) while in the afternoon the YPL were guests at the Berlin headquarters of Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals.
The workshop itself, led by project leader Dr. Jo Ivey Boufford and by Dr. Nora Grasselli of ESMT, a new partner in the YPL programme) unfolded during Saturday 8 and the early part of Sunday 9 October. It included not only insights provided by the two conveners and opportunities for peer-to-peer consultations, but also the opportunity to quiz members of a panel of senior leaders in global health. In addition, the YPL were tasked with preparing a session to be presented within the core WHS prorgamme.
During this session,"The Leadership We Want", which was well-attended and included viewers of a video feed in an overflow room, the YPL shared their own professional experiences and insights.
As part of their experience, the YPL were also able to network during the coffee breaks and other organized social events with the researchers, representatives of private companies, NGOs and international organizations, as well as policymakers that the WHS brings together.
