The GYA grew out of discussions amongst top young scientists from around the world convened by the IAP for the World Economic Forum “Summer Davos” meetings in 2008 and 2009. The Global Young Academy (GYA) was officially founded in February 2010 with support by IAP.  With the help of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities BBAW and the German Young Academy it is receiving start up funding from the Volkswagen Foundation. Its primary aim is to unlock the potential of young scientists from around the world; working together, this group can provide new insights on major challenges in scientific capacity-building and science-based education, policy and international issues.

New GYA Office at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina

On 27 January 2017, the Global Young Academy (GYA) opened its new office at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle, Germany, with an afternoon reception. Previously, the GYA had since 2011 been hosted by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Berlin. However, in order to work closely with the national academy of sciences in Germany, the GYA has now relocated its administrative headquarters to the Leopoldina. The opening reception saw Professor Jörg Hacker, President of the Leopoldina, extending a very warm welcome to the GYA at its new premises at the Leopoldina, and the representative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) express his support for the continued activities of the GYA. The GYA receives core-funding from the BMBF and is supported by the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP). The GYA also benefits from project funding provided by a variety of other donors and partners.
