The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) – for the advancement of science in developing countries, (formerly the Third World Academy of Sciences) promotes scientific capacity and excellence in the South through the election of eminent scientists and the sponsorship of research grants, fellowships, awards, workshops and meetings. Founded in 1983, TWAS currently has 588 members from 76 countries. About 80% of its members are scientists from developing countries. The secretariat is located on the premises of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. A major portion of TWAS funding is provided by the Italian Government. UNESCO is responsible for the administration of Academy funds and staff.
