Overview
Effective healthcare institutions need effective leaders. The IAP Young Physician Leaders (YPL) programme trains emerging leaders (under the age of 40) working in healthcare centres around the world and links them together in a peer-support network.
The issue of developing leadership qualities among health professionals is often neglected, with many young professionals having to learn their leadership skills almost by trial and error as they are handed positions of responsibility.
Although incorporating leadership training programmes into the medical curriculum is gaining in importance, in practice too few countries are actually providing such training (See, for example: Health Professionals for a new century: transforming education to strengthen health systems in an interdependent world)
To contribute to building capacity in this area, IAP launched its Young Physician Leaders (YPL) programme in 2011 in partnership with the World Health Summit (WHS) and the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centres and Medical Universities.
Sessions have been held at each WHS since 2011. In addition, a regional event was organized at the Regional WHS in Singapore in 2013 and in Portugal in 2018. A 5th year event for alumni was organized in May 2016 at the World Health Assembly.
To date, the IAP YPL network of alumni includes more than 200 leading young professionals, under the age of 40, who were nominated by their national academies. Their details can be found in the dedicated YPL Directory
The IAP YPL call for nominations is sent to IAP member academies and M8 Alliance members every year in May (but please note that due to the COVID-19 crisis, IAP will not hold the regular leadership workshop at the World Health Summit in October 2020).

Dr. Shuvra Dasgupta has worked as an Emergency Physician Consultant and Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Kingston Jamaica since 2011. She is also the Director of the Pre-Hospital Medical Services Programme, which is an Educational Unit that teaches Emergency Medical Services (EMS). She has a wide range of clinical and research interests, but one of her main focuses has been to bring EMS to the forefront in her country through education, research and clinical intervention. Eventually she hopes that her initiatives will bring about policy change in a country where a centralized EMS system is non-existent. During this worldwide pandemic, she works on the frontline of one of the largest hospitals in the country and has been involved with the day to day ‘solution-oriented’ management of dealing with the CoVid-19 response in Jamaica.
Apart from her Doctor of Medicine in Emergency Medicine, she also holds an MPH from Johns Hopkins University majoring in Injury Control and Disaster Preparedness. Shuvra lives in Kingston. In her free time, she reads and loves going to the beach. She also enjoys spending time with family, friends and her black lab Lola.
